As we know, female voices dominate the infertility blogosphere and the growing canon of infertility books. That's why I was thrilled when this writer spoke to my writing workshop Thursday night.
The class has nothing to do with infertility, so his presence in relation to my life was a testament to coincidence and prevalence. He spoke about his forthcoming memoir on "voluntourism," explaining the surface subject is really a vehicle for him to share how he's dealt with the emotions of not becoming a father. Of course, I wanted to ask a million questions about that, but the conversation rightly focused on things like narrative structure and book proposals. Anyway, I'm really happy that he's writing this important book (it'll probably be a year until it comes out).
It was a strange feeling, being secretly pregnant. I was glad for that, that he didn't have to stare a belly in the face as he, childless, spoke. But (hopefully) one day my pregnancy won't be secret. It's all very strange.
prevalence, yes. and wow. I would love to read that when it comes out. Thanks for sharing!
